Financial Aid & Merit Scholarships >> How to Apply

For government or need-based aid
To apply for federal, state, or SMU need-based aid, file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the federal processor as soon as possible after January 1 each year. List SMU as your school of choice on the FAFSA. SMU’s school code is 003613.

You can complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Apply for a PIN to electronically sign your FAFSA at www.pin.ed.gov.

You must also file a College Scholarship Services CSS/PROFILE with the College Board. This will help our advisers to further assess your financial needs. Again, list SMU as your school of choice and use the code 6660. You can complete the CSS/PROFILE online at http://profileonline.collegeboard.com

Use completed IRS tax forms from the previous year if possible, but, if necessary, use carefully estimated information to make a timely application. A FAFSA must be filed each year to maintain eligibility.
