RU ready? They are here – Generation Y – in our classrooms and headed to college. Gen Y does not know life without a personal computer, communicates via text messaging and IM (instant messaging), and loves mom and dad. They want what they want, and they want it now! KWIM (know what I mean?)

Today’s young adults are high achievers, tech savvy, and more ethnically diverse than previous generations. Today’s marketplace and society are fast-paced, technology-driven, and increasingly global. Do you see the parallel?

Technology and engineering are everywhere, touching everything in our daily lives. Increasingly, college graduates need both a technical foundation and a global, liberal arts view.

SMU’s School of Engineering recognizes the need for a sound technical degree paired with a liberal arts education. Engineering and Beyond is our mantra. SMU engineering students have the opportunity to customize degree plans to meet their interests and to participate in a variety of professional development opportunities. PXT (please explain that.)

Consider the student majoring in Engineering Management and minoring in Chinese. She is preparing for a career with the Secret Service or FBI. Or, what about the student majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a Pre-med track and minoring in Spanish? He is preparing for medical school to pursue a career in medicine serving a bilingual population. Engineering + Theatre or Communications or Political Science or Dance = today’s students CAN have it all! HCIT (how cool is that!)

SMU Engineering is committed to giving students Engineering and Beyond - beyond the classroom. Below are some of the unique opportunities that await your students at the SMU School of Engineering:

·         Paid experience through Co-op programs/internships.

·         Networking opportunities with field professionals, such as the annual She Networks She Wins event for female engineers and Lunch with a Pro.

·         Service-learning incorporated in senior design projects. Mechanical and Electrical Engineering seniors developed devices to aid those with disabilities.

·         Leadership in engineering student organizations and throughout campus.

SMU Engineering provides students with opportunities – academic opportunities and professional development opportunities. SMU’s Engineering and Beyond provides the broad-based curriculum that combines a technical foundation with liberal arts courses key to success in today’s fast paced, global marketplace. As your Gen-Y'ers talk with you about their future, share with them the amazing opportunities that await them at SMU Engineering. BOL (best of luck!) G2R (got to run.)
