But did you know…

  • Central University Libraries houses more than 2 million volumes. Fondren Library’s general collection houses more volumes than any of the SMU libraries, which comprise the largest private research collection in the Southwest.
  • During 2003-04, SMU received more than $19 million in external funding for research. Examples of projects include: the discovery of a seventh-century royal tomb in Guatemala, a news story that ranked No. 60 among Discover magazine’s top 100 articles in 2004; an antenna that will increase efficiency in cell phones and reduce radiation exposure; and a book on déjá vu that was featured in The New York Times and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
  • SMU alumni number about 100,000 internationally. About 60,000 live in Texas, with more than 39,000 alumni living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
  • SMU employs 1,733 students, including 719 graduate and 1,014 undergraduate students. More than 31 percent of students earning federal work-study funds work with children and young adults in schools and community agencies.
  • The Algur H. Meadows Award enables students to interact with such leaders as Angela Lansbury, Arthur Miller, and Stephen Sondheim.
  • SMU ranked 20th nationally in the 2004 NCSA Division I Power Rankings, which recognize the best overall athletics programs. The University also ranked 44th as the top school in its conference for the fifth year in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup Division I final standings.
  • SMU consists of three campuses:
    Dallas campus – 76 buildings on 186 acres, 5 miles north of downtown
    Taos campus – 25 buildings on 295 acres at Fort Burgwin, New Mexico
    SMU–in–Legacy campus – 4 buildings on 18.4 acres in
    Plano, Texas
    Total full-time faculty – 603, and 84 percent of full-time faculty members hold the doctorate or highest degree in their FIeld.
