Mission Statement

The Women and LGBT Center at SMU works to create purposeful learning, leadership, and advocacy opportunities that allow you to have a space to clarify and develop your knowledge, values, skills, and identities in relation to gender equity, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.

Goals

  • To advocate, at an individual and systems level, on issues of gender equity, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression
  • To build a safe, inclusive, supportive and affirming campus community for women and people in the LGBT community
  • To celebrate the contributions and achievements of women and allies
  • To encourage women and LGBT students to advocate for themselves and others
  • To empower women and LGBT students through creating pathways for their involvement and leadership in all aspects of university life
  • Support the wellness, developmental process, academic success and retention of women and LGBT students
  • Provide resources, programs and experiences that support and expand student leadership development
  • Increase community awareness and allyship of women and the LGBT community
