SMU Student Values Statement
"I, as a citizen of the SMU Community, commit myself to upholding the values of intellectual integrity, academic honesty, personal responsibility, and sincere regard and respect for all SMU students, faculty, and staff"
In consideration of the SMU Student Values Statement, and recognizing that parties are a part of our community life together, party themes should be respectful of the race, ethnicity, national origin, familial status, sexual orientation, gender, religion, class, age, and ability status of all SMU Community Members.
Cultural appropriation (the adoption of some specific elements of one culture for entertainment value) should be avoided. When art, jewelry, dress, etc. are used outside of educational context and without respect to cultural tradition, the Student Values Statement is compromised.
When selecting party themes, SMU student leaders and organizations are encouraged to consider the implications of the party name, advertising, dress/costumes, social media, and decorations.
Some examples of party themes which would not be in the spirit of the SMU Party Theme Statement include though are not limited to the following:
- Golf Pros and Tennis Hoes
- Cowboys and Indians
- Thug Mansion
- White Trash Party
If you have questions or wish to discuss your party theme with a Student Affairs staff member, you are encouraged to contact any of these offices:
