Off-Campus Housing

Welcome to the resource page for students looking for off-campus housing. There are a number of things to consider when thinking about moving off-campus, including location, price, amenities and roommates

What to Look for in an Apartment

  • Type of housing: Do you want to live in an apartment complex, a condominium, a duplex or a house?
  • Location: Do you want to be in walking distance? Do you want to live near the Mustang Express service?
  • Cost: How much rent can you afford to pay? Do you need to have a roommate?
  • How long will you live there? Do you want a 9 or 10 month lease or a 12 month lease?
  • Do you want a furnished apartment or unfurnished?
  • If thinking about a roommate (or roommates), do you want your own bedroom?
  • What amenities are important to you? Things to consider are laundry facilities, parking, storage, recreation facilities, gated access.

Roommate Considerations

Living off-campus with a roommate means more than just talking about the "usual" roommate issues of compatibility like study and sleeping habits, having guest over, and apartment cleanliness. In addition to that, you'll need to think about the following (even if you already have a roommate in mind!):

  • Paying the bills: How will you pay the bills and who is responsible for making sure rent, utilities are paid on-time? Will bills be split evenly between all roommates, or divided based on who has their own bedroom/bathroom?
  • Furnishings: Who will bring what furnishings?
  • Food/Cooking: Will you cook together or each be responsible for buying/cooking their own food? Will you share cooking utensils, dishes, etc., or each have your own?
  • Cleaning & household chores: How will you divide the cleaning the common areas of the apartment? Will you take turns or rotate jobs? How important is a clean kitchen and bathroom to you?

It is a good idea to talk about these issues before you move in and to write down what you and your roommate(s) agree upon.

Resources for Finding a Roommate

Sometimes just talking with your friends and classmates may help you find others looking for a roommate. You may also want to consider these resources.
