Student Handbook
Girls Talk Back, an exciting one-week summer camp for outstanding young women entering the 11th grade, is a partnership between SMUs Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development and the Foundation for the Education of Young Women.
Course Work
Students participate in three classes, one course in the morning and two in the afternoon. Every young woman selected attends a writing seminar each
morning. Designed to polish skills in written talk back, each participant works to improve expertise in communication. In the afternoon students rotate to public speaking and professional etiquette classes. The faculty is comprised of SMU instructors, as well as teachers from public and private schools and recognized community leaders.
Residence Life
The Girls Talk Back program offers participants the chance to live in a
centrally located, supervised SMU residence hall for one week. The specially trained staff oversees a wide variety of evening activities. These experiences enable participants to interact, create friendships, and enjoy a preview of college lifeall in a safe, controlled environment.
All students live in an air-conditioned residence hall. Students are housed two to a room with adjoining or hall bathrooms. Rooms are furnished with two single beds, chests of drawers, desks, chairs, and window blinds. Linens are provided. Students must furnish reading lamps, alarm clocks, blankets, pillows
and personal belongings. Carefully selected residential counselors (RCs) live in the residence hall to provide guidance and supervision. All students dine in the SMU cafeteria.
