It's been a yearning since you opened your first book. It's been a longing since you picked up your first pencil. It's been a burning since The Idea first entered your mind.

You want to write. We teach you how.

Join us at The Writer's Path at SMU. We're a home for adults who are following the desire and fulfilling the dream of writing a book. Fiction or non-fiction, short story or personal essay, we are the place to learn craft, find allies and embrace the practice of writing. Our classes are non-credit, adult education, held once a week for four to six weeks, in the evening, on the main Dallas SMU campus. Classes must be taken in order, one at a time, because they build on each other.

Want to hear what we're about? Click here to listen to authors/instructors, Kay Honeyman, Daniel J. Hale and program director J. Suzanne Frank, on KERA's Think, talk about The Writer's Path at SMU.

START HERE: Creative Writing Foundation in the entry class for EVERYONE. This five-week class is where you meet the allies who will take this journey with you. It's where you feed your curiosity about what kinds of writing you can do and experiment with storytelling. It's also where you begin to build the habit of daily writing into your lifestyle.

If you've taken Foundation and want to write fiction, take Story next. You'll learn how to build the skeleton of your story, so it has the elements necessary to be strong and vital. From there, your next class is Plot where you flesh out the story. If you're already on the path, Heroic Chapters, followed by Chapters, are your next steps.

FOR THOSE QUALIFIED STUDENTS APPLYING FOR NY 2017: the deadline for manuscript submission into Revision is August 15.
