The Gifted Girls Conference is offered through the Gifted Students Institute.

Keynote Speaker

Yolette Garcia
Ms. Garcia is the Assistant Dean for External Affairs and Outreach the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University. She's responsible for identifying and prioritizing community partnerships and projects for the School. She also develops strategies for communications and promotion.

Prior to joining SMU, Ms. Garcia was a veteran public broadcasting journalist and manager for KERA television and radio, the North Texas public broadcasting station. She served the public broadcasting organization in various capacities for 25 years. In her most recent position, Garcia supervised the creation of a new arts unit for radio and Web. Prior to this she directed Communications/Marketing, Web, the Educational Resource Center and community outreach for all of KERA's content areas (Radio, Television, Web and Education). She has served as Assistant Station Manager of KERA 90.1, and News Director. As such, she managed the activities of the radio staff, and provided editorial guidance and oversight for the News department. She also supervised joint Radio and TV journalism projects for local and national broadcast.
She received her undergraduate degree in Art History from Wellesley College, Wellesley, Mass. and a Masters of Arts degree in Art History form SMU.

Conference Location

The Gifted Girls Conference will be held on the SMU campus. A map (click here to link to SMU's online map site), parking directions, and confirmation letter will be emailed to the adult accompaning the students. If you do not receive an email, please contact the GSI office. Space is limited; please make reservations early.

Conference Fee

The conference registration fee per person is $45. The registration fee for girls who are eligible for the free or reduced-price lunch program is only $10. The Conference is limited to 7th-grade girls and their teachers/sponsors, but each teacher who registers five girls will receive a free registration.  Breakfast is NOT provided, and the light lunch (included in the registration fee) is not served until 12:15.


Complete a registration form (below) for each girl and adult attending (copy the form as needed).  All girls must be accompanied by either a teacher or a parent, and there must be at least one sponsor for every ten girls. Due to space limitations, the conference is limited to seventh-grade girls and their sponsors. Notice that the form requires a Guardian's signature.

Please mail all of the registrations for any one group of girls sponsored by the same adult together in one packet with a check or purchase order payable to SMU/GSI.  Requests for refunds must be received seven days before the lecture/workshop; otherwise no refund will be made.  Cancellation prior to one week will be refunded less a $15 handling fee; a check for the balance will be mailed in 3 to 4 weeks.  Registrations and payment information must be sent to:
