Identify FiRs
- Recommendations from SMU Community
- Meet with the Assistant Director of Academic Initiatives & Faculty Outreach to discuss the role description and lifestyle of the FiR role
- Meet with current FiR’s, Residence Life staff and visit spaces (apartments, RCs, etc.)
- Obtain letter of support from Department Chair
- Obtain letter of support from Dean
- Signed FiR Application from Department Chair and Dean
Selection Process
1. Candidate submits letter of intent and Curriculum Vitae
Letter of Intent: Why are you interested in taking on the responsibility of Faculty in Residence? How would you contribute in creating a vibrant community that integrates the academic and residential experience in a Residential Common?
2. Lunch meeting with Residence Life & Student Housing Staff (Sr. Executive Director of Residence Life & Student Housing and Associate Director of Residence Life with Assistant Director of Academic Initiatives & Faculty Outreach)
3. Meeting with Student Leaders, Faculty Partners, and Residence Life Staff (including Residential Community Directors, Resident Assistants, and other Central Staff)
* Based off of Best Practices at Institutions with Live-in Faculty Programs
Appointment Process
1. Selection Committee makes recommendation based on:
- Candidate Letter of Intent
- Lunch meeting w/ Sr. Executive Director & Associate Director
- Faculty, Staff, Student Feedback
- Vice President of Academic Affairs & Provost Feedback
- Vice President of Student Affairs Feedback
Selection Committee consists of:
- Faculty and Academic Administration
- Assistant Director of Academic Initiatives & Faculty Outreach
- Student Affairs and Residence Life & Student Housing Administration
2. Assistant Director of Academic Initiatives & Faculty Outreach submit recommendations to Provost & Vice President of Student Affairs for approval and appointment

- Faculty in Residence Kick Off Event
- Faculty Senate Presentation
- Deans Council Presentation
- Assistant Director of Academic Initiatives & Faculty Outreach begins to meet with interested in faculty about the position to answer questions
November/December
- Assistant Director of Academic Initiatives & Faculty Outreach meets with interested in faculty about the position to answer questions
January
- Intent to apply is due 1/28/13
February/March/April
May
- New Faculty in Residence are selected
