SAAS Services and Resources

Academic Counseling

Academic Counselors meet regularly with first-year and academically at-risk student-athletes in one-to-one sessions to discuss effective strategies. Counselors determine the frequency of meetings based on individual history and academic performance. Student-athletes are expected to self-report academic progress, and to take full responsibility for their academic career.

Faculty Feedback

In addition to Early Progress Reports (EPRs) and Mid-term Progress Reports (MPRs) commissioned by the Office of the Registrar, SAAS counselors also solicit faculty feedback for student-athletes an additional three times each semester. This allows the counselor to better assist the student in developing an academic strategy, often including effective work with tutors. Feedback is also shared with coaches.

Workshops

The A-LEC conducts academic skill-building workshops throughout the semester. Topics include managing time, taking tests, reading texts effectively, taking and using notes, improving concentration and memory, and preparing for finals. If workshop times conflict with a student-athlete's schedule, the information can be shared in a one-to-one setting with either a SAAS academic counselor or an A-LEC learning specialist.

Tutoring

The A-LEC provides drop-in tutoring for all undergraduate students. Owing to the obligations of practice and competition schedules, student-athletes may also arrange for regular weekly tutoring by appointment through their SAAS academic counselor.

 

Enrollment & Course Management

Practice & Travel

Before registration, the SAAS team examines practice and travel schedules for each team and works with academic advisors to develop strategies to minimize class absences.

Class Scheduling

Effective Time Management is critical to the student athlete. SAAS counselors strongly recommend using the 24/7 Time Awareness scheduling tool. Student-athletes can visualize their practice and class schedule and make sure they have time for meals, studying, and breaks.

Adding and Dropping Courses

SMU undergraduates can drop and/or add classes during the first week of each semester without these changes affecting their official transcripts. Following the first week of class, a dropped class will result in a “W” (withdrawal) appearing on the student’s academic record.  Because enrollment affects National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) eligibility, following the ADD/DROP deadline, student-athletes must inform SAAS, their coach, and SMU Athletics in writing before they drop any class. Student-athletes must also meet other academic requirements for NCAA eligibility including: progress towards degree, and major declaration requirements. Student-athletes are expected to consult their academic advisor, their SAAS counselor, and the Athletic Department's Compliance and Eligibility staff during enrollment and throughout the semester to insure they meet all university and NCAA requirements.
