Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center
A-LEC tutoring is a resource for all students, not just for those who find themselves in academic trouble. A-LEC tutoring is designed to complement and support students’ direct contact with their professors. Our aim is to connect you with a knowledgeable person with whom you can discuss the course material you are working on, whether your work is focused on a specific problem or on more general questions about how to study for the course. Over one hundred tutors, mostly upper-level undergraduates or graduate students, provide support for most first- and second-year courses, as well as many advanced courses. A-LEC tutoring is available at no charge to SMU undergraduates, and no appointment is necessary. Check the schedule of when specific courses are covered.

Learning Strategies Workshops
SMU students often find that they need focused attention on one or more specific academic skills—and the A-LEC is here to provide help in the form of workshops on a wide variety of college-level study techniques. In one-hour sessions, students receive instruction in specific concepts and discover strategies for applying these principles to their own work. Whether you’re just entering the university or confronting the challenges of an advanced curriculum, you can benefit from sessions on Time Management, Test Preparation, Note Taking, Anxiety Management, and more. As an SMU student, you can work with one of the A-LEC’s Learning Specialists to develop a personal system for managing time, tests, and texts. You can take the LASSI (Learning and Study Strategies Inventory) to gain a sense of your individual strengths and weaknesses in areas such as motivation, information processing, and test preparation. You can learn to employ and benefit from organizational tools such as the “Semester at a Glance” planner, the “Time Awareness” grid, the “Anticipating and Planning for Courses” outline, and the “Finals Preparation” battle plan. DASS is the primary contact for all SMU students with disabilities. This office assists students with disabilities to effectively utilize resources they may need and helps them work with professors and staff in obtaining appropriate and reasonable accommodations. DASS is dedicated to providing an equal opportunity to participate in the University's curriculum, programs, and activities. The Student Athlete Academic Services team helps student athletes become more independent, self-confident, and efficient learners through counseling student athletes at orientation and registration sessions, identifying academic support needs through consultation with coaches and student athletes, and conferring with faculty and academic advisors to determine the most effective academic assistance and services.
ORACLE, HDEV 1110
A one-credit elective, ORACLE (Optimum Reading, Attention, Comprehension, and Learning Efficiency) provides students with a means to build advanced reading and learning skills. Students explore strategies for organization, time management, note taking, and study-reading, as well as concentration, test preparation, and even management of test anxiety. With individual guidance from your instructors, you can improve your reading comprehension, double to triple your reading rate, and develop a personalized system of strategic study techniques.

This class is a one credit, graded course designed to help students achieve greater success in their academic, professional, and personal lives through ongoing self-assessment and journal writing.
