How to Apply

Application Deadline for Fall-Semester Admission in Dallas is May 1



Applicants to the Master of Divinity (M.Div.), Master of Arts in Ministry (M.A.M.), Master of Sacred Music (M.S.M.), Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.) and the Master of Theology (Th.M.) programs must submit three types of documents in order to be considered for admission.

1) A completed application form, including required essays for the specific degree you are seeking, and the personal assessment. A $50 non-refundable application fee must accompany the application. This form may be submitted either online or with our printable application.

2) Official transcripts from all colleges or universities previously attended indicating degree(s) earned.  Official transcripts must arrive in a sealed envelope to the address noted on the application form. Neither student copies nor faxed transcripts are acceptable.

3) Four letters of recommendation with attached reference forms from persons listed on the application. These should include: your pastor or a minister who knows you best, two professors or two professional employment colleagues, and a lay leader in your church or community context.

The application, and all supporting materials, will be received and coordinated through the Perkins Office of Admissions and Financial Aid.  Please submit all materials and complete supplemental steps by the appropriate deadlines.  M.S.M. applicants will have additional steps outlined below.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

M.Div., M.A.M., and M.T.S. Applicants

Applicants for the above degree programs must have completed an undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale in a well-balanced, pre-theological curriculum. Other considerations include seriousness of purpose, potential for growth in the preparation for the profession of ministry (M.Div. and M.A.M only), emotional stability, and likelihood of satisfactory performance in the degree program.

M.S.M. Applicants

Applied Concentrations

Choral Conducting: Submit a 20 minute video link(s) and writing sample

Composition and Arranging: Submit links to recordings, PDF of scores, and goal statement

Keyboards: Register for an audition on campus or submit a recorded audition

Organ: Register for an audition on campus or submit a recorded audition

Academic Concentrations

Music Education: Submit a 20 minute video link(s), writing sample and schedule interview with sarahallen@smu.edu

Worship Arts: Register and submit a writing sample

Liturgical Musicology: Register and submit a writing sample

Th.M. Applicants

Applicants for the Th.M. degree program must have successfully completed an Association of Theological Schools - accredited degree at the master's level requiring at least 2 years of full-time study or the equivalent credential from an institution outside the U.S. and Canada. Academic ability, as shown by a minimum GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) in a previous master's-level program, is required.
