Perkins School of Theology meets you where you are both spiritually and geographically. Our flexible extension program creates a smoother transition for you and your family, and enables most students to attend seminary while still employed full or part-time.
Through Perkins, Southern Methodist University offers students in Houston, Galveston, and surrounding areas an opportunity to begin study toward three different Master's degrees in theology. Those preparing for ordained leadership in the church generally seek the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or Master of Arts in Ministry (M.A.M.) degrees, while those called to the study of theological disciplines traditionally seek the Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.) degree.
Classes meet in Houston each Thursday evening and two Friday evenings per month, with one Saturday in Houston and one in Galveston per course per semester. First year students in the M.Div. or M.A.M. programs also take Spiritual Formation on Monday nights. Although three courses are the maximum allowed per semester, most students take two. An internship requirement also may be fulfilled through this program. You can take up to two-thirds of your M.Div. degree or half of an M.A.M. or M.T.S. degree in Houston-Galveston, with 24 credit hours required on campus in Dallas
Dr. Jonathan Chism, a lecturer of history at the University of Houston-Downtown campus, is serving our students and program in Houston-Galveston as Student Services Specialist. He will serve to coordinate the on-site student services in Houston-Galveston and provide administrative support to the theology school’s recruitment program.
