This Lunch & Learn event features Dr. Roy Heller, associate professor of Old Testament, with a presentation titled “In the Beginning... What?: Another Look at the Opening Story of the Bible.” Dr. Heller’s presentation will begin with the opening verse of the Bible. “Genesis 1:1 is one of the most well-known portions of Scripture,” Dr. Heller says. “What is often not known or appreciated is the fact that the opening word of the Bible in Hebrew – in fact, the opening syllable of the Bible – is ambiguous and can be translated in two very different ways. These two options,” Dr. Heller adds, “have implications not only for how we understand the beginning of the story of creation, but also for how we understand God and how we understand what ‘creation’ even means.”

The Houston-Galveston Extension Program of Perkins School of Theology, located at 3501 W.
