Planning Ahead for Internship

Prerequisites for Internship

Perkins School of Theology

Master of Divinity

REQUIRED: In preparation for internship, M.Div. candidates will have completed a minimum of 37 term hours of course work, including but not limited to the following:

  • Two courses in required biblical studies (six hours)
  • The Church in Its Social Context (three hours)
  • Christian Heritage I and II (six hours)
  • Interpretation of the Christian Message (six hours)
  • Introduction to Preaching (three hours)
  • Introduction to Christian Worship (three hours)
  • Spiritual Formation (one hour)

RECOMMENDED: United Methodist students, of whom six term hours in United Methodist history, doctrine, and polity are required by the Book of Discipline, are advised to take these courses prior to internship if possible. Students from other traditions are also advised to be familiar with their denomination's history, doctrine, and polity before doing internship. 

Master of Arts in Ministry

REQUIRED: Before beginning internship, M.A.M. candidates will have completed at least one term and 12 term hours of course work at Perkins School of Theology.

RECOMMENDED: M.A.M. candidates are advised to take the following courses if possible before beginning internship:

  • The Church in Its Social Context (three hours)
  • Two courses in required biblical studies (six hours)
  • Spiritual Formation (one hour)
  • At least one of the foundational courses for the student's specialized degree track
