Need-Based Grants

Need-Based Grants

Students who are not selected to receive a fellowship or scholarship may apply for a need-based Perkins Tuition Grant. The majority of our students qualify for this type of financial aid.  The grant is $5000 for full-time students and $1800-$2000 for part-time students. In order to be considered, applicants must have been admitted to a degree program prior to March 1 and completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) via the Internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Enter the SMU school code (003613) when completing this online form. Please be reminded that the Office of Admissions must receive FAFSA results as soon as possible after January 1st but no later than March 1st. Awards are given on a first come, first served basis. Students entering in the spring term are not eligible for this award.

Perkins Tuition Grants

Need-based Perkins Tuition Grants are awarded to part-time or full-time students in any degree program. These awards require enrollment of at least 6 hours per regular term. Application is made by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) via the Internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov using the SMU school code 003613. Grants will be awarded annually on a first come, first served basis after review of your new FAFSA results beginning January 1 and continuing through March 1 as funds remain available. Applicants must be admitted to the specified degree program no later than March 1.

Rio Grande Conference/Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference Grants

A limited number of full-tuition grants are available to full-time students in any degree program who are certified candidates for ordained ministry in either the Rio Grande or the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference. Recipients are normally required to complete a minimum of twenty-four hours each academic year (twelve hours each regular fall and spring term).  Exceptions to the full-time status requirement are handled on an individual basis. Applicants must have demonstrated need by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Following review of applicants’ FAFSA results, grants will be awarded annually on a first come, first served basis beginning January 1 and continuing through March 1 as funds remain available.

Perkins Annual Conference Endowment Grants (P.A.C.E.)

Additional grants are available from Perkins for students from the following annual conferences of The United Methodist Church:  Texas, North Texas, Central Texas, Southwest Texas, Northwest Texas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Amounts vary with each conference. Following review of applicants’ FAFSA results, grants will be awarded annually on a first come, first served basis beginning January 1 and continuing through March 1 as funds remain available. Applicants must be admitted to the specified degree program no later than March 1.

Dean's Honor Scholarship recipients may also apply for these Annual Conference Endowment Grants.

There are also many outside scholarships that are need based. Students are encouraged to apply and to give careful attention to deadlines and requirements for these scholarships.
