Philia

Fall 2011

The Tau Beta Chapter at SMU kicked off our year with Philia, our first ever brotherhood retreat. The goal was to have bonding time with our brothers and get to know each other better before rush and welcoming new brothers.

It was a pirate versus ninja theme and everyone was encouraged to dress up. A prize went out to the best-dressed pirate and ninja. We spent some time getting to know each other better through icebreakers and Speed-Dating. The Speed-Dating turned out to be everyone’s favorite activity because they got a chance to just talk with their brothers, especially those they don’t get to talk to often. This activity really strengthened everyone’s brotherly connects and helped at recruitment because people could bring other brothers into the current conversations.

As a chapter, we set goals for the year and for rush. The goals ended up aiming for more bonding with each other and pledges, more community and campus involvements, and more professional development events. Business also got done such as the alcohol awareness presentation, and preparation knowledge for rush. We ended the night with Engineering and Theta Tau songs and playing Jeopardy, with some pirate and ninja trivia thrown in, to finish the night. Philia was a success and hopefully will become an annual event.
