OIT Technology News: Spring Term Edition

Canvas adoption, changes to Inside.SMU, and new two-factor authentication
are just a few of the items highlighted this month.
Canvas is Now 

Canvas SMU’s transition to Canvas is rapidly moving forward. Formal weekly Canvas training workshops began in early January and will continue through September. If you are an instructor who has yet to begin preparations for using Canvas, the time to begin is now.
Inside.SMU moving to the Cloud 

Soon Inside.SMU, our on-campus collaboration tool, will be moving from an on-site Microsoft SharePoint server to a Microsoft-hosted SharePoint in the Cloud service. This move will provide more timely updates with greater storage and backup capabilities. Learn more about the move to the cloud.
Where do I go for help 

There have been a large number of changes as we transitioned to Shared Services. Although we are still modifying and improving processes, the main contact channels will remain intact.  Know how to get help when you need it.
Secure Print Launches Later This Month 

Campus printers will be upgraded to a secure print release environment beginning February 29th. Find out how this change will reduce waste and improve security.
Microsoft ending support for older browsers 

Microsoft will soon stop supporting older versions of Internet Explorer and will only continue to support Internet Explorer (IE) 11 and their new Edge web browser. Learn how this change may affect you.
Two-Factor Authentication coming to SMU

DuoSoon, OIT will be rolling out two-factor authentication (2FA) to certain online SMU systems beginning with Employee.SMU. The two-factor authentication will be handled by a third party called Duo Security. Find out more about 2FA and Duo.
Matlab Now Campus-Wide

SMU has recently expanded our software license for Matlab to include student access. This expansion allows students to install Matlab 2015 directly from the vendor. Instructions for downloading this application can be found on our Matlab services page.
Service Desk Quarterly Reports 

A majority of the help requests are captured within our help desk ticketing system, providing access to a large amount of data regarding the types of issues or requests being made on a regular basis. Find out about trends, typical response times and areas for improvement

New IT Training Available 

We have added several new IT Training Workshops for the spring term, including new courses in using Canvas, Box, and Qualtrics. See a list of available upcoming trainings at smu.edu/ITTraining.
Box Departmental Storage Coming

DuoBeginning February 15, we will be accepting requests for departmental storage using Box. With Box, departments will have unlimited storage on the cloud system to collaborate and share files.
