ExamSoft Retiring: SMU has terminated its agreement with ExamSoft as of July 1, 2017. After that date, you will not have access to your exams, assessments, or question bank data.

General Information

ExamSoft is SMU's cloud exam management solution that enables faculty to administer online exams while restricting access on those devices to the Internet or other networked resources. During an exam period, the test taker's computer or iPad is restricted to accessing the test only. The test taker's device cannot communicate with the Internet or run other applications (unless permitted). Once a test is submitted, all communications and programs on the device are unlocked and restored.  ExamSoft tests are fully encrypted and can only be accessed using the SMU ExamSoft SofTest client application. ExamSoft also features the ability to link specific online test questions with specifically defined learning outcomes and for providing robust reporting on those outcomes.

Visit ExamSoft's product Overview Page to learn more about ExamSoft, SofTest, and SofTest-M and how they all work together.  Please contact the OIT Helpdesk to schedule a direct consultation with an SMU Academic Technology Team member for more information as to whether or not ExamSoft makes sense for you!

Integration with Canvas

A custom building block has been configured in Canvas, SMU's course management system, to synchronize the roster in a Canvas course with ExamSoft. Students enrolled in a course are “enrolled” in ExamSoft and associated with a specific course. This synchronization building block allows tests created in ExamSoft to be associated with appropriate courses in Canvas.  In addition, this same synchronization provides a mechanism for pushing earned grades in ExamSoft to Canvas' Gradebook.

The integration with Canvas is minimal. ExamSoft enrollment and grade reporting are completely dependent on manual data uploads. Please contact the OIT Helpdesk for guidance on how best to use ExamSoft with Canvas.

ATTENTION: ExamSoft Login Changed (August 1, 2016)

On August 1, 2016, SMU enabled "single sign on" capability for the ExamSoft service.  SMU's ExamSoft faculty and student users can now utilize their SMU ID number and SMU passwords to access the service.  While the impact of this change should be minimal, please notify the OIT Helpdesk immediately should you experience any difficulties and we will schedule an appointment with you to work through the problem.  No data (previous assessments, question banks) will be lost during this change.  In the event your data appears to be missing when you log into ExamSoft with your SMU email address and password, please submit a ticket and OIT and ExamSoft will restore your data.

Logging In

Students will be notified by their instructor if they will be completing an exam using this software.

Your username is your SMU ID number and your password is your SMU password.

If you experience any ExamSoft login issues, please submit a ticket to the OIT Help Desk or contact your instructor a least 24 hours prior to your scheduled exam.

Reminders Before an Exam

  1. Ensure your device is fully charged! Typically power adapter/outlets are not available during your test.  Ensure that your device has plenty of battery life to last for the duration of your exam.
  2. Download and install the SofTest application before arriving. The software is available here.
  3. Download the test prior to your arrival. You will not be able to open the test until the exam time has begun.
  4. Ensure that any pending software updates have been installed so those do not interrupt your test.  Also verify that the date and time on your computer are set appropriately.

ExamSoft

ExamSoft and its student testing software, SofTest, pair up to offer a secure and offline test environment. Exam questions can range from true/false to essay, and be administered on paper (using ExamSoft bubble sheets) or digitally utilizing student laptop computers or Apple iPads.

Exam Time Accommodations

One of the most common ExamSoft requests from faculty is for additional time to be added to an ExamSoft assessment for a student or group of students. At this time, only ExamSoft system administrators can add time for students or groups of students for particular assessments.  If you have students or groups of students that require additional time, please submit an OIT Helpdesk request citing the ExamSoft assessment ID and the group of students requiring extra time.  Only faculty can submit requests for extra time accommodations.

Hard-copy / Paper Testing Options

Inasmuch as online testing can improve assessment experiences for faculty and students alike, many scenarios still call for the need to be able to deliver hard-copy / paper tests to students.  For faculty needing to administer an exam without access to a computer, Apple iPad or Internet connection in a paper format (ie, for a student whose laptop or tablet's battery died, for a make-up test, for a student athlete who is traveling, or in order to deliver a disability-related accommodation), ExamSoft allows for ExamSoft bubble scoring sheets and Scantron answers to be imported manually into an ExamSoft assessment.  For instructions on delivering a hard copy exam using an ExamSoft bubble scoring sheet click here.  If you require consultation or guidance in importing scanned scores into ExamSoft directly, please contact the OIT Helpdesk to set up an appointment with an Academic Technology team member.

SLO Assessment & Reporting

ExamSoft returns robust test item and student achievement analysis correlated with designated student learning outcomes, and could be a good fit for instructors who need a secure and reliable way to measure student learning outcomes with sets of test questions.
