SMU music professor Xi Wang wins national competition

Southern Methodist University associate professor Xi Wang won the Commissioned Music Project competition of Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society.

Composer Xi WangSouthern Methodist University associate professor Xi Wang won the Commissioned Music Project competition of Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society. The award includes $2,000 and the commission of a new chamber music piece for three to nine performers. The musicians will perform the work at the Pi Kappa Lambda annual convention in October.

Wang earned a degree from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and other degrees from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and Cornell University. She has received commissions from the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic and Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra, among others. Several orchestras have performed her music. She also has received several awards, including a MacDowell Colony Fellowship and a Charles Eves Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
