SMU continues to closely monitor information related to Thomas Eric Duncan, who has died from the Ebola virus at Dallas’ Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the Texas Department of State Health Services continue to manage the case with the Dallas County Health Department and the hospital.

There is no indication that there is any connection to SMU regarding this case.

State and county health officials reported last week that they had isolated the Mr. Duncan’s family members and had identified and were monitoring others who may have come into close contact with him. To date, none of these individuals has shown symptoms of the disease.

SMU health and emergency preparedness officials are in regular contact with state and local officials about this case and receive updates daily. SMU has protocols in place and maintains working relationships with appropriate government agencies to remain prepared for any communicable disease or other health issues.

National and local health officials are emphasizing that the risk of contracting Ebola is very low. It is spread by direct contact with the body fluids of a person who is showing symptoms of the illness, and not through air or water.

SMU will continue to monitor this case and provide updates on the SMU home page and the SMU Parents website. For health questions or concerns, please contact the SMU Health Center, 214-768-2141.
