‘Justice in a Post-Racial World’ focus of Gilbert Lecture

Stanford University Professor David Palumbo-Liu will discuss the difficulty of prosecuting hate crimes and perceived race-blindness of the law Thursday, Feb. 13, at a SMU Gilbert Lecture.

DALLAS (SMU) — Stanford University Professor David Palumbo-Liu will discuss the difficulty of prosecuting hate crimes and perceived race-blindness of the law Thursday, Feb. 13, at a SMU Gilbert Lecture beginning at 6:30 p.m. (following a 6 p.m. reception).

David Palumbo-LiuThe Gilbert Lecture Series event, sponsored by SMU’s Department of English and free and open to the public, will be in the DeGolyer Library’s Stanley Marcus Reading Room.

During his talk, Palumbo-Liu will delve into the murders of Trayvon Martin and Vincent Chin, and the later trials of their killers. He also will discuss Hannah Arendt’s controversial writings on Nazi war crimes.

Palumbo-Liu is a Louise Hewlett Nixon Professor who teaches comparative literature at Stanford. He is founding editor of the e-journal, Occasion: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities, and is a contributing editor for The Los Angeles Review of Books. He also blogs for Truthout, The Boston Review, The Huffington Post and Al Jazeera America.
