Audrey Self completes Dallas Marathon after suffering brain trauma

SMU's Audrey Self, recovering from a severe injury, finished a marathon on Sunday.

Audrey Self crosses the finish line

Just over a year ago, Audrey Self, an accounting major at SMU, suffered a severe brain injury in a car wreck and the odds of her surviving were small.

Thanks to her own persistence, support from family and friends, and extraordinary care at Baylor University Medical Center, Self beat the odds. She progressed from a vegetative state to competing in Sunday's MetroPCS Dallas Marathon -- with help from her mother, from her friend and mentor Cynthia Anway, and Team Audrey.

Julie Self, her mother, pushed Audrey in a wheelchair the majority of the 5.7-mile marathon. Audrey walked the last 100 yards to across the finish line.

Team Audrey has 26 members: four marathoners, six half marathoners and three relay teams. The members include neighbors, relatives, longtime family friends, work colleagues and friends of friends.
