SMU celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
SMU celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of events.
SMU will celebrate the 30 days of National Hispanic Heritage Month -- from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 -- with a variety of events, including a parade, Mariachi music, a family luncheon, a poetry slam and a lecture by alumna Belita Moreno of the George Lopez Show.
Activities at SMU related to Hispanics' heritage, culture and contributions to the American way of life include:
| Sept. 19 | Food Chain with the SMU Women's Center Noon in Atriums A-B of Hughes-Trigg Student Center This discussion group provides support, education, and mentoring opportunities for women of color who are faculty, staff, and students. | Sept. 20 | Viva America 7 p.m. at the SMU Flagpole This will include a small flag parade at the beginning of the program followed by performances by a Mariachi band and traditional Hispanic dancing. |

| Sept. 24 | 1st Generation/Immigrant Student 6 p.m. in Porticos B-C-D of Hughes-Trigg Student Center A discussion about the lives of students who are first-generation immigrant. |

| Oct. 6 | La Familia Luncheon 1 p.m. in the Ballroom of Hughes-Trigg Student Center A lunch with students and their parents. There will be an introduction to the Hispanic organizations, performances and food. Reservations are required; call 214-768-4578. |

| Oct. 9 | Beta Poetry Slam 7:30 p.m. in the M Lounge of Hughes-Trigg Student Center Sigma Lambda Beta is hosting a poetry slam. A poetry slam is a competition at which poets read or recite original work. |

| Oct. 12 | Community Service-Tierra Sur All Day in Dallas's Oak Cliff area Volunteering that a Latin Heritage Festival Hosted in Oak Cliff. |

| Oct. 16 | Alumna Belita Moreno of the George Lopez Show 6 p.m. in the Theater of Hughes-Trigg Student Center Moreno will talk about being a Hispanic woman in the entertainment industry and her time here at SMU. She grew up in Oak Cliff and graduated from SMU in 1971 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She is best known for her roles as Benita "Benny" Lopez on the ABC sitcom George Lopez and Edwina Twinkacetti/Lydia Markham on Perfect Strangers. |

According to the hispanicheritagemonth.gov, "The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402."
