Beal Bank science, engineering fair draws 750 middle, high school entrants to Fair Park

Nine hundred middle and high school science-fair winners from across North Texas gathered at Fair Park on February 26 to exhibit their skills at the 2011 Beal Bank Dallas Regional Science & Engineering Fair. The regional competition is organized by Southern Methodist University (SMU) in collaboration with public and private schools in Texas Education Area 10.

Dylan Hunn had a confession to make Saturday afternoon. He likes math, a lot.

“Math really is my favorite subject at school. I’ve gone as far as reading workbooks for fun during the summer,” said Dylan, a 14-year-old freshman at Shepton High School in Plano. “That’s kind of nerdy.”

Well, maybe. But his mathematics experiment, which won first place in his division at the Beal Bank Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair hosted by Southern Methodist University’s physics department, was kind of awesome, like many of the 750 other projects on display at Fair Park.

Dylan said his “epiphany” came not in math class but in a class called human geography.
