New Orleans: Five years after Hurricane Katrina

Five SMU journalism students, guided by Professor Lucy Scott, went to New Orleans on Friday to cover the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Those they interviewed included Red Cross workers who had returned for the anniversary; Abdulrahman Zeitoun, the main character in Zeitoun, this year's common reading; and others.

Making the trip were Hayley Nelson, Kassi Schmitt, Nicolette Schleisman, Sarah Bray and Josh Parr, all students in Professor Scott's Broadcast II class. Parr, online editor for The Daily Campus, also filed video dispatches for it as part of the NOLA Now project: see The Daily Campus coverage.

Daily Mustang Managing Editor Aida Ahmed, Professor Jake Batsell and Professor Scott will remain in Dallas to coordinate Web publication.

In the wake of the hurricane, SMU offered assistance — including temporary enrollment — to Louisiana college students who had been displaced by Katrina. Read more.
