Economics Department's data mining team named among top in the country

The SAS Institute has announced that SMU’s Data Mining team placed as one of the top three Data Mining Teams in the Nation for the 2009 SAS Data Mining Shootout co-sponsored by SAS, Dow, and Central Michigan University Research Corporation.

The SAS Institute has announced that SMU’s Data Mining Team is among the top three data mining teams in the nation for the 2009 SAS Data Mining Shootout co-sponsored by SAS, Dow, and Central Michigan University Research Corporation. 

The order of finish will be announced at the 12th annual SAS Data Mining Conference on October 27, 2009, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. 

The three students on the team are Michael Fulmer, Jingjing Ye and Steven Gregory. They and their faculty sponsor, Economics Department Chair Tom Fomby, will receive all expense paid trips to Las Vegas to attend the conference and the award ceremony.

The other two top finishers are North Carolina State University and Oklahoma State University.  In total, 47 U.S. universities and colleges registered while 28 provided a final submission for judging.

SMU’s Economics Department fielded the national champion in last year’s competition.  The team members were Stefan Avdjiev, Manan Roy, and Jayjit Roy. Read more.
