SMU presented the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Awards to Darrell Lafitte ('54), retired chairman and CEO of Compass Bank in Dallas; Malcolm S. Morris ('68), co-founder and chairman emeritus of Living Water International; Gary E. Pittman ('53), co-inventor of the first patent on the LED (light emitting diode); and Richard Ware ('68), president of Amarillo National Bank, one of the largest family-owned banks in the nation. The 2008 Emerging Leader Award was presented to Richie L. Butler ('93), founding senior pastor of Union Cathedral and partner with CityView, a national real estate housing fund.
