2nd Annual SMU Fashion Week Begins April 1
Student-led event complements Fashion Media program at Meadows
DALLAS–The second annual SMU Fashion Week, a five-day event promoting
education within the fashion industry, will run from April 1 through April 5.
In collaboration with SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts, Fashion Media minor,
and the SMU Retail Club, this weeklong celebration features panelists comprised
of industry professionals, and a student-produced fashion show. SMU Fashion
Week, a student-led nonprofit, provides students with diverse career exposure.
"We have so many students on this campus with an interest in the art and
commerce of fashion," says Camille Kraeplin, director of SMU's Fashion Media
minor. "This year's program highlights topics ranging from fashion history and
the role of fashion in culture to the intersection of fashion and technology. I
think it will be a fascinating week and a great complement to our Fashion Media
program."
Fashion Week begins with a donation drive hosted by Genesis Women’s Shelter
inside SMU’s Owen Fine Arts Center lobby from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All are welcome
to drop off their gently used items such as clothing, accessories, toys, electronics,
unopened cosmetics, and books.
At 6 p.m., SMU Fashion Week will host its 2013 kick-off party at the Angelika
Film Center at Mockingbird Station. Guests can enjoy music, food, drinks, a popup
shop, trend presentation, manicures and pedicures, and a free screening of
The September Issue outside on the mezzanine at 7:30 p.m.
SMU Fashion Week will host a Fashion, Technology, and Entrepreneurship panel
in the Ernst & Young Gallery in the Cox School of Business at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday,
April 2. The panel will include power couple Amber Venz, president of
rewardStyle, and Baxter Box, CEO of rewardStyle, co-founders of the blog
monetization company. Guests can learn about the new industry of fashion
blogging, the technology surrounding it and its impact on the fashion industry.
An additional panel of Neiman Marcus buyer Tracy Hicks and local fashion
designers will be held on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Ernst & Young Gallery in
the Cox School of Business.
On Thursday, April 4, Balenciaga exhibit curator, Myra Walker, will present the
SMU Fashion Week keynote address on the role of a curator in fashion history in
the Meadows Museum’s Bob and Jean Smith Auditorium at 6:30 p.m.
On Friday, April 5, at 5:00 p.m., SMU Fashion Week will close with SMU Retail
Club’s annual spring fashion show, featuring summer looks from Tootsies, gift
bags, and music by DJ Lucy Wrubel. The sunset fashion show will be held on the
lawn of Bishop Blvd on SMU’s beautifully landscaped campus. All events are free.
