SMU Debate Starts the New Year Strong, Finishing Second at UTD Dallas Tournament
Meadows student Lila Friedlander and her partner won five of six preliminary rounds
SMU’s debate team finished second at the national tournament held January 5-7 at the University of Texas at Dallas. Lila Friedlander and her partner won five of the six preliminary rounds to finish as the number two seed in the tournament. Friedlander defeated the University of Texas at San Antonio on a 3-0 decision in the semifinal round. In finals, SMU lost to the University of North Texas on a close 2-1 decision. The debate topic this year concerns energy policy; SMU argued for federal credits to be offered to Native Americans to establish wind energy in their communities.
Friedlander is in her first year of debate and will debate again this weekend at the University of North Texas tournament.
The UTD tournament is a major national tournament and attracted 42 competing schools from 21 states, including New York, Michigan, Maryland and Iowa. SMU defeated teams from Rochester, Houston, Augustana, San Antonio and Dallas on their way to the final round.
