Meadows Student Guitarists Take Top Honors at Brownsville Competition

Six performers win first place at UTB Guitar Ensemble Festival

Meadows School of the Arts guitarists took top awards at the recent UTB Guitar Ensemble Festival in Brownsville, Texas. Katrina Leshan and Russ Callison won first place in the university duo category, and guitarists Russ Callison, Gabriel DeHoyos, Leo Garcia and Brendan Johnson won first place among the university quartets.

The competition, held April 7-9 on the University of Texas-Brownsville campus, is co-sponsored by UTB and Texas Southmost College. The event is in its tenth season, and includes competitions at high school, college and university levels. This year’s event featured more than 300 guitarists from schools across Texas and from as far away as California and Mississippi. Event organizer Dr. Michael Quantz noted that this year’s festival showcased the greatest number of ensembles and represented the highest playing level in the history of the festival.
