Campus Community Invited to Lecture on Humor, Jan. 28

Purdue linguistics professor Victor Raskin will discuss humor, which he views as a vital part of humanity

A free public reception and lecture on humor by Victor Raskin, distinguished professor of linguistics at Purdue University, will be presented Friday evening, Jan. 28 by the Division of Communication Studies at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts. Dr. Raskin is the author of Semantic Mechanisms of Humor and Ontological Semantics, and is founding editor of HUMOR, the journal for the International Society of Humor Studies. The reception begins at 6 p.m. in the Taubman Atrium of the Owen Arts Center, followed by the lecture from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in O’Donnell Hall, Room 2130 of the Owen Arts Center. Admission is free, and no tickets are required.

The lecture kicks off the inaugural North East Texas Humor Research Conference, to be held January 28-30 at SMU. Leading humor scholars from the disciplines of advertising, communication, linguistics, political communication, psychology, organizational studies, rhetoric, semantic linguistics, sociology, and communication linguistics will be presenting work and discussing their current humor-related research.

“Humor is not trivial but rather a vital part of what it means to be human,” said conference coordinator Owen Hanley Lynch, assistant professor of communication studies at SMU. “This conference brings to SMU scholars from many disciplines, each with the purpose of understanding and explaining the significant role humor has in our lives. We hope members of the campus community will join us for what promises to be a highly entertaining opening lecture!”

For more information, please contact Dr. Lynch at 214-768-1755 or olynch@smu.edu, or visit http://texashumor.w3mg.com/.
