SMU Alumna Visits Australia with Oprah Winfrey Show

Julene Fleurmond, Journalism graduate and Big iDeas grant winner, recounts her journey

Southern Methodist University Journalism alumna Julene Fleurmond was one of several people who work with youth who was chosen to take part in Oprah Winfrey’s Ultimate Australian Adventure in December.

Julene was one of those selected to attend the Oprah Winfrey Show Season Premiere and the Australian Adventure after writing to the producers about her passion to work with young people to teach them about entrepreneurship, dream-building and social venturing through her organization Young Dreamer Enterprises and website www.dreamerENT.com (founded through a Big iDeas at SMU grant), and recounting her recent trip to Haiti. In Australia she got to meet many teachers, native Australians, koala bears, and kangaroos. Four shows that were taped will be aired in January (from the 18th to the 21st).

“Oprah Winfrey has always been an inspiration to me in journalism, entrepreneurship and philanthropy, and I had always envisioned meeting her. Seeing Oprah in person, and that she is human too, made me realize that dreams can come true with hard work and passion when you pursue the purpose within you. It was a really amazing, surreal experience!” – Julene Fleurmond
