The SMU Music Educators Workshops are annual professional development and learning opportunities offered for music educators and students of music through the Music Division of SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts. The Music Division of Meadows is an accredited institutional member of both the National Association of Schools of Music and the Texas Association of Music Schools.

Adult students who earn graduate credit for participation in the Music Educators Workshops may apply the credit to a Master of Music in Music Education degree, once accepted into the masters program.

These sequential sessions will approach the elements of music through kinesthetic awareness. Participants will be actively engaged in music making through purposeful movement and will examine learning through brain to body connections. Activities will include movement, rhythmic solfège and keyboard improvisation. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to plan rhythmic lessons that are appropriate for general music, choral & instrument rehearsals, and special needs populations, sequence movement instruction to ensure success, select appropriate music to enhance purposeful movement, and articulate the pedagogical approach of Dalcroze Eurhythmics.

Dates: July 28 – August 1
Times: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily
Noncredit cost: $500
Graduate Credit Cost: Additional $1,000.00 for 2 hours of graduate credit (Paid separately to SMU)

Dalcroze Faculty: David Frego

David Frego (Dalcroze Eurhythmics) is Chair of the Department of Music and holds the Blumberg Endowed Professorship of Music at The University of Texas at San Antonio. As an instructor in Dalcroze Eurhythmics, he regularly performs and presents workshops throughout North America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. While performing artists of all ages benefit from rhythmic training, eurhythmics in teacher training is an important focus of Dr. Frego’s research. Other teaching and research areas include dance philosophy and the application of Dalcroze Eurhythmics as palliative treatment for adults with post traumatic stress disorders. David Frego has published DVDs, book chapters and articles in both music education journals and medical journals for arts medicine.
