Undergraduate Admission

Jason is pursuing an degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has done extensive research as an undergraduate and has also Co-op'ed and interned at various places during his stay at SMU. Lastly, he is an integral part of the SMU Ballroom Dancing Team.

At IDA@SMU we create novel techniques inspired by knowledge discovery, data mining, machine learning, artificial intelligence and statistical analysis to work with data from various sources. We currently focus on efficient classification methods for large volume genomic and metagenomic data and applications for real-time data stream cluster analysis. For example, intrusion detection and hurricane intensity prediction.

The faculty here at SMU are constantly doing research, and when they need help they come to us undergraduates. I have been lucky enough to work on research in the Laser Micromachining lab, research in the Micro-sensor lab, and research in the Biomedical Instrumentation & Robotics Lab. All of this experience has allowed me to easily get into the professional world.

While at SMU I have been able to Co-op with DRS Infrared Technologies, have three summer internships with BP, and I have also participated in three different Skunk Works Projects in the SMU Innovation Gym. Not to mention all of the research has been an incredible resume builder.

Be sure to work hard in all of your classes! You never know which one of your teachers may ask you to join their research team.
