Undergraduate Admission

Madeline Smith '13

Hello! My name is Madeline Smith. I am from Austin, Texas and graduated from Cedar Park High School in 2009. I am currently a junior here at SMU double majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics.

This past summer I interned in the design and manufacturing group of semiconductor packages and thermal characteristics at Texas Instruments. During my time there, I created a database for thermal characteristics of different chips as well as doing analysis on cross-sections I made. Interning is amazing and has many perks. For one, you get to make amazing connections in the industry as well as learning how to work in a professional team environment. Also, you get to see how the things you learn in class can be applied in the professional field. I learned so much in my 12 weeks at TI than I ever expected to. Not to mention you get paid very well!

Outside of class, I am very involved with on-campus groups. I am Vice President of Ambassadors for Perspective Engineering Students where I help put on events for prospective students and tour them around the school. I am also Vice President of Society of Women Engineers where I plan outreach events to teach middle school girls about the possibilities with engineering and get them excited by doing engineering related projects. I have two jobs on campus; I work in the Engineering Recruitment Office and I am a grader for one of the Mechanical Engineering professors. Last, I am part of my dorms Hall Council which puts on events for the dorm throughout the year.

The Lyle School of Engineering is amazing. The people, professors, and the opportunities this school offers are truly unique. This school teaches you not only how to be a great engineer, but also a great communicator and an overall rounded person.
