Ambassadors for Prospective Engineering Students, fondly known as APES, is the leading organization of the Lyle School of Engineering. While our primary function is to help recruit the incoming freshman engineering class, we are the face of the Lyle School of Engineering through community service projects and involvement across the SMU campus.
Recruitment: Why did you choose Lyle Engineering? What courses do you take your freshman year? What does an engineer DO? These are just a few of the questions we help prospective students and families find answers to when they visit the Lyle School of Engineering. Every member of APES has a unique story to tell about their SMU experience – lab research, leadership positions on campus, studying abroad, co-ops, you name it… – and these stories are Lyle’s greatest asset when it comes to student recruitment. As a member of APES you will not only help others find their college home, but you will also become friends with some of the finest members of the Lyle School of Engineering.
The Face of Lyle: APES devastates all myths that engineers are nerds who spend all their time in a lab. Each fall, APES leads the effort to represent the Lyle School of Engineering in the much-beloved SMU Homecoming parade by building a parade float. Our ambassadors also hold leadership positions across campus in organizations ranging from Greek life to religious life to campus programming. Beyond the SMU community, APES is the face of Lyle Engineering through community service projects including Habitat for Humanity and The Stewpot.
