Profile: Monuplea Makor

Monuplea Makor is following in her sister’s footsteps as an SMU engineer.

Her sister, Shiattin, graduated in 2003 with a degree in electrical engineering and has moved to Amarillo to take a position with the U.S. Department of Energy.

While her sister’s enrollment at SMU played some role in her decision to attend the school, Monuplea says she also came to SMU because the school offered a specialization in biomedical engineering. She hopes to pursue a career in medicine or medical research.

Monuplea was a track and basketball star in high school, and her good grades and athletic abilities earned her a Dale Hanson Scholarship to help pay for college. She’s also earned money for school by working during the summer as a tutor at the math and science camp the School of Engineering sponsors for DISD middle school students.

“I like working with kids and showing them that math and science can be fun,” she says. “I wouldn’t want to do anything else.”
