Declaring an Engineering Major or Minor

Declaring an Engineering Major or Minor

Students Entering SMU

Students entering SMU as first year students from high school or as a transfer student indicated a major on their application. Students have the opportunity to update that major during the registration process for AARO (Academic Advising Registration and Orientation). Please follow the instructions listed in the AARO registration process regarding updating majors.

All students entering SMU who wish to pursue degrees in engineering are advised by the Lyle Undergraduate Advising Office. Students meet with an adviser during AARO (Academic Advising Registration and Orientation) and subsequent enrollment terms for the purpose of course selection and four-year planning. Students may also schedule appointments with an adviser at any time to discuss other academic issues.

Once students complete the required engineering subset of courses outlined below, they are eligible to officially declare an engineering major. All requests for engineering major declarations are reviewed by the department chair (of the department offering the student’s desired degree) and Associate Dean. Once approved, students are assigned a faculty adviser in their new department.

Continuing Students at SMU

Students wishing to change their major to engineering, add an engineering second major or add an engineering minor, should complete the Dual Major/Minor Declaration Form. Note that before the form is approved, students must have met the engineering subset requirements listed below. Requests for major or minor declarations are reviewed by the department chair (of the department offering the student’s desired degree) and Associate Dean. Once approved, students are assigned a faculty adviser in their new department.
