Information Literacy Program

SMU Libraries Information Literacy Program introduces the University community to research skills for learning in the classroom and beyond.  The Program supports teaching, learning, and research at the University with its focus on searching, evaluating, and using information resources effectively and ethically.

The expected level of understanding information literacy is proficiency, with students developing a set of intellectual and practical skills that enable them to search, evaluate and use information. SMU’s new University Curriculum, beginning fall 2012, requires students to develop and demonstrate their use of information literacy skills throughout their studies at the University.  Liaison librarians are available to work with faculty and departments to facilitate the integration of information literacy skills into their courses and the curriculum as part of the Information Literacy Program.

Liaison librarians support the teaching and research activities of faculty. Your liaison librarian can:

  • Assist you in developing class assignments that satisfy the information literacy competencies in the university curriculum;
  • Assist you in teaching your students how to find, evaluate, and use information sources effectively;
  • Take suggestions for ordering titles to support your teaching and research; and
  • Offer research consultations to help you make the best use of our library resources.
