  • What is a punitive grade and will getting one affect my VA educational benefits?

The only grade that is non-punitive is a grade of W.  All other grades (A through D-) affect a student’s GPA.

If an F is earned, SMU reports the last day of attendance to the VA.  The student may be required to pay money back to the VA for the class.

If a student completes a term with all F’s, SMU reports the last day of attendance to the VA.  If the student is suspended, SMU reports unsatisfactory progress to VA.

  • What majors or academic programs does SMU offer?

SMU offers a wide range of degrees, majors, minors and certificates through its seven degree-granting schools. Academic information for all degree plans are found in the University catalogs.

  • I am failing one of my courses. How can I get help?

If you are having difficulty in a class, your first contact should be your professor to discuss your coursework and obtain suggestions for improvement. In addition, the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center (ALEC) offers a number of academic support services ranging from individual tutoring, to a Writing Center to help with papers in any class, to workshops on various study skills.

  • Can I study abroad using my VA benefits?

If the courses are “degree required” courses, SMU certifies tuition and fees to VA.  Room/board and travel expenses cannot be certified to VA.

  • Can I use by benefits for graduate programs?

Academic graduate programs are approved by VA and can be certified provided the student has VA eligibility.
