Proposal

The Engaged Learning proposal is a well-articulated description of the project, from beginning to end. It includes the project's purpose, goals, methodology, timeline and bibliography, and is in line with the student's academic learning and the Engaged Learning student learning outcomes and reflections.

Review the Scoring Template.

The proposal:

  • Begins with the title of the project's topic, the project purpose stating the end goad and benefits to be gained, and the action to be taken to meet the end goal and benefits.
  • Follows with basic information about the research, service, internship or creative work to be done, the target population or community of practice involved, the student's academic learning to be applied, why the student chose the topic, and the student's personal, academic and career goals.
  • Details the project timeline and methodology. This includes likely changes that may occur and alternative solutions may be employed.
  • Concludes with a bibliography that includes sources of information that informed the project in its development and will be used in its realization.

Note: Research students should follow standard research guidelines in their field for proposing research projects.

Here's How It Works:

  1. Review the Engaged Learning project, application process and required forms.
  2. Identify your SMU mentor, someone in the field of your project, someone who can provide you with knowledge, advice, resources and feedback throughout your project.
  3. Discuss your Engaged Learning project ideas.
  4. Identify the target population or community of practice appropriate for your project.
  5. Develop a project that links to your SMU education, the knowledge and skills you have learned in the classroom.
  6. Develop your proposal, using the student learning outcomes, reflection exercises and scoring template as guides.
  7. Think about how you might present your work and develop your final project.
  8. Write your proposal. Have your mentor review it and sign off.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Student learning happens in each phase of the project. Student learning outcomes establish the competency levels for each phase. Review the Engaged Learning Student Learning Outcomes Rubric. Use the outcomes to design and guide your project.

REFLECTION EXERCISES

Reflection exercises focuses the project, making connections between what is proposed, what actually happens and what is the result. Reflection helps students manage expectations and alter plans, if necessary. Review and use the reflection exercises to develop your proposal.

SCORING TEMPLATE

Reviewers refer to a scoring template when evaluating Engaged Learning projects. Use the template as a guide as you complete your proposals.
