Grants

SMU demonstrates its support of Engaged Learning projects through the grant program. All approved projects are eligible to receive up to $2,000 in funding for project expenses.

Students document their need for project funding on the Funding Request form. The deadline to submit the form is the same as the deadline to submit Engaged Learning project applications.

Please note: Grant money cannot be used for tuition expenses.

The funds are disbursed in three stages:

  • Pre-project grant awarded to all students ($250)
  • Reimbursement for money spent during project if project requires additional funds (up to $1,500)
  • Engaged Learning award, awarded to all students upon completion of project, and presented at graduation luncheon ($250)

The Office of Engaged Learning manages the grant program. The financial officer meets individually with students after approval of projects. Student receive the pre-project grant after signing and returning the Engaged Learning confirmation letter.

Here's How It Works:

  1. Review the Funding Request form in the application packet.

  2. Complete the information about your project.

  3. Explain your need for funding.

  4. Make a list of the items needed. Indicate their costs. Submit invoices from vendors.

  5. Indicate the total amount that you are requesting.

  6. Submit the Funding Request form as part of your application packet.
