September 24, 2008               Maguire Public Scholar Lecture by Robin Lovin, "Politics In Religious Perspective: Temptation, Tool, or Task"

Much has been written about the rise of political activism among conservative religious groups and the decline of religious voices on behalf of peace and justice causes. These recent changes reflect an oscillation that is characteristic of American religious life between the rejection of politics as a temptation to unfaithfulness and the manipulation of politics as an instrument for religious purposes. All groups, liberal and conservative, progressive and evangelical, seem to go through these cycles, though on different schedules.

Rev. Robin Lovin, Ph.D., is the Maguire University Professor of Ethics at SMU.  Please join us for his lecture on Wednesday, September 24 at 12:00 Noon in the Umphrey Lee Center Ballroom on the SMU campus.  A reception and heavy hors d'oeuvres will precede the lecture at 11:30.  This event is free and open to the public.
