Position Information:

The Associate Director of Direct Marketing is responsible for overseeing the creation and implementation of all direct marketing programs, which includes all direct mail, telemarketing and e-mail pieces, including communications for solicitations ad cultivation activity of the division of Development and External Affairs. This position is part of the Alumni & Constituent Giving team, within Development and Alumni Affairs, which consists of three units: Alumni Relations & Engagement, Annual and Alumni Giving and Planned & Endowment Giving. The Alumni & Constituent Giving team is responsible for increasing alumni giving participation rates 25% by 2015, in coordination  with the Second Century Campaign effort.

The Associate Director of Direct Marketing will work closely with the Director of Alumni Relations and Engagement to ensure direct marketing strategies are aligned with Annual Giving strategies

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee all direct marketing programs, including setting the strategy for each direct marketing tactic, evaluating the creative elements and analyzing results, including costs, revenues and ROI for each communication and managing the direct marketing budget;
  • Interact with other DEA departments for their mass marketing needs in relation to cultivation and solicitation of donors and potential donors, including primary clients within Development and External Affairs such as Principal Gifts officers of development for seven schools within the University, National Major Giving Team development officers, the Office of Alumni Relations, Spirit, and Traditions, the Office of Donor Relations, and the Athletics Department. The Associate Director is the primary liaison with all DEA departments who use direct marketing and is responsible for ensuring direct marketing tactics are used to meet the needs and goals of all DEA “clients”;
  • Act as the primary manager of the external telemarketing vendor responsible for executing the day to day operations of DEA’s telemarketing efforts. The Associate Director will develop and lead planning efforts for external telemarketing and direct mail vendors, negotiate contracts, jointly develop strategies tactics with the vendors, set performance targets for reaching goals, and ensure optimal performance and ROI from the vendors via regular review and analysis;
  • Manage the Direct Marketing staff of three, who execute all direct marketing programs, including managing a calendar of all communications, creating mail lists for each communication and working with internal and external printers, as well as the Integrated Marketing team within Development and External Affairs to develop and execute communications


Bachelor's degree is required. A minimum of seven years' of professional work experience is required, preferably in direct mail marketing management.

Some direct mail experience is required; telemarketing and e-mail experience are preferred. Some experience supervising staff highly desired. Experience working for or working with a non-profit or higher education development office is preferred. Experience evaluating creative elements of direct marketing tactics is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with the ability to build relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing. Strong negotiation skills, as well as cross-functional/departmental relationship management are essential.

Candidate must possess strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities. Must also demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced team environment that is deadline driven. Strong project management skills are critical.

Candidate must have strong analytical and creative evaluation skills.  Must also have the ability to produce quantitative analysis to effectively analyze and synthesize information in order to set strategic direction for the group.

Candidates who possess mastery of MS Office, especially MS Excel and internet skills will be given priority. Familiarity with constituent databases such as PeopleSoft and BBEC is a plus.
