Position Information:

The Assistant Director, Marketing and Communications, is part of the Program Services team in the Office of Development and External Affairs, and will plan and direct print and collateral materials for several programs annually, including University fundraising and donor relations events including the Tate Lecture Series, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum, and other campaign and Centennial events. 

This position’s primary focus is divided equally between event script writing and project management in collaboration with SMU’s Integrated Marketing staff and Program Services staff and leadership. 

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  

  • Write event remarks for University leadership; write copy for advertisements, invitations, programs, signage, etc.;
  • Content management for Program Services Websites and social media;
  • Proofread and edit all print and collateral materials; gaining proper approvals, ensuring that deadlines and budgets are met and that appropriate messages and themes are emphasized;
  • Provide general event support;
  • Other duties as assigned.


Bachelor’s degree is required.  A minimum of three years’ of work experience is required, with at least one year in a position requiring writing, proofreading and editing.  Project management experience strongly preferred.  Experience with a non-profit is preferred.  Experience in a fast-paced, high-profile team environment handling events and/or major productions is desirable. Experience that includes Website management and social media is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain relationships with multiple constituents (vendors, customers, donors, board members, staff, and sponsors. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing. A strong focus on attention to detail is essential.

Candidate must possess strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced team environment.  The ability to be flexible and adapt quickly to changing priorities is essential.

Candidate must demonstrate strong problem solving skills with the ability to make decisions and manage conflict well.

Candidate must demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, spelling and grammar and proofreading.  Desktop design skills and Website content management skills, i.e. Sitecore, are strongly preferred.
