Diversity

The Psychology Department is committed to providing an excellent educational experience that is rich in diversity. Promoting diversity at the department level is consistent with the goals of Southern Methodist University, which is committed to maintaining a diverse student population. To help meet these goals, SMU provides a welcoming climate and culture to its diverse populations. We believe that an awareness of diversity in our courses, training sites, and campus will provide our students with the necessary experiences to be strong leaders, researchers, and teachers in an increasingly diverse workforce.

Consistent with its policies on recruitment and selection of students and faculty, and with stated guidelines for research and clinical training, the program emphasizes the appreciation and practices associated with dealing effectively with diverse populations. These include, but are not limited to: race, ethnicity, national origin, language, gender, age, disability, religion, culture, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status. Hence, the program will not sanction individuals refusing to deal with certain groups on the basis of personal or religious beliefs. Learning to deal effectively with a wide range of individuals is part of high quality professional training.
