Undergraduate Research Support
In 2009, ISEM made a conscious decision to recruit students into the laboratories beginning in their first semester and regardless of their majors. ISEM has now established an Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Program designed to attract SMU undergraduate students, freshman through senior, of all majors into closer proximity with Earth Sciences by providing employment opportunities. This program is unique among universities in welcoming students of all majors to Earth Sciences. Its success can be measured by the diversity of majors participating, the number of participants, the number of majors and minors in Earth Sciences that pass through it, and the number of students who have leveraged their work into Engaged Learning recognition. Funding for this program is provided to ISEM primarily by ISEM's Hamilton Family Fund and Marr Research Scholars Fund. For Earth Science majors and minors with more specific interests, ISEM encourages a close association with the most appropriate professor. Students who begin without specific interests may transition into this more specialized level. The intention is that these students will engage in research leading to publication, and they are supported as Marr Research Assistants. Students with a broader calling and special talents that are appropriate to needs are introduced into the Gaffney Family Interdisciplinary Initiative focused on the Great Trinity Forest.
