Awarding Excellence in the Humanities and Sciences
You are considered automatically for competitive merit scholarships in Dedman College when you are admitted to SMU and meet the following:
- List your preferred Dedman College major as the first choice on the SMU admission application.
- Submit the completed SMU application. Deadlines are as follows:
- January 15 – first-year students
- April 1 – transfer students
- November 1 - early action students
Admitted student profiles are reviewed for high school and college transcripts and GPA, test scores, student essay, recommendation letters, and financial need. There are two types of competitive merit scholarships in Dedman College.

Merit – awarded to academically strong students, without consideration of financial need. Most are renewable based on full-time enrollment in a Dedman College major and 3.000 cumulative and area GPA

Merit and Need – awarded to academically strong students, with consideration of financial need. Most are renewable based on full-time enrollment in a Dedman College major and 3.000 cumulative and area GPA
Should you receive an offer Awarding Excellence, you will be notified through both your SMU email and your permanent mailing address.
- Offers are made between early March and the middle of June
- Please accept your offer by email no later than May 1
Rewarding Excellence in the Humanities and Sciences
If you are currently a Dedman College major – or earning a minor in Women’s Studies, Asian Studies, or Russian Area Studies – you may be eligible for competitive merit, and merit and need, scholarships consideration.
During any semester, apply for Rewarding Excellence in Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences by emailing Mara Morhouse (Natural Sciences and Math) or Rachel Romero (Humanities and Social Sciences) with the following information:
- your student ID and cumulative GPA
- year in school and expected graduation term
- describe your short and long-range goals, both academic and professional
- ask two SMU professors in your major to write recommendations (acceptable by email)
Offers are made between early May and June 15. In the meantime, look for scholarship applications listed through Fastweb.com and the SMU Office of National Fellowships and Awards.
